How to Work A Sample Sale!

No ladies, this post will not give you tips on how to push, hit and shove you're way to a fabulous find. Instead, a few ideas on how to work the merchandise you come across.

We all know that sometimes good luck is in the air and you can find that stellar piece that'll keep you bragging for months. However, there are those sales where nothing seems to fit.

Last night, I was at the Savvy & Co. Max Mara Sale and met several women that liked what they found, but were on the fence about whether they could pull it off. Now, with a couple of suggestions, they were able to snag a good deal.

Savvy Tip 1: Don't forget a little DIY Action Goes A Long Way

I was talking to a customer yesterday that LOVED a necklace but didn't like the color of the grosgrain string. I suggested that she cut off the string, find a new color at a trim store, and sew a new one on. She was immediately sold on the idea and bought the necklace! Always keep in mind that it's easy to change a color, (my picks are Rit Dye and tea bags) add embellishments or even closures, buttons and grommets. Don't forget that a little craftsmanship goes a long way.

Savvy Tip 2: Use Your Tailor

I spoke to so many women that found pieces they liked, but there was something minor wrong with the fit or look. Really, most pieces just needed a quick fix such as getting the hem shortened or a button sewn on. A good tailor or cleaner can do wonders and can probably to do everything from putting straps in or taking shoulder pads out(depending on whether you like the 80's look that's so in right now) and much more.

Savvy Tip 3: Search the "Bin"!

As we all know, there's always that bin of mismatched "stuff" (a lost belt, slip, broach) that seems damaged, came off a blouse or just got lost in the chaos. It may be worth asking if these lonely pieces are for sale, because it's a great way to make an outfit fabulous and original.

Come check out the last day of our Max Mara Sample Sale at the Met Pavilion, 123 West 18th (between 6th and 7th). We're open until 4:00pm today and Delman Shoes starts in-house on May 6th, check it out at www.thesavvy.com

Laura Lobdell Brings us Fabulously Artisian Pieces!

We couldn't be more excited for Laura Lobdell! Her sale starts this Wednesday at noon and we have some amazing pieces from her store right here in Greenwich Village.

We were able to sit down with Laura and find out more about her style and inspiration earlier this week. Turns out, every piece has a back story. It was like being inside the Actors Studio where we learned more and more with every question.

We loved her Encantos or wishing charm Collection because it's not just aesthetically sound, but it's full of substance. She explained that her inspiration came votive offerings she saw at churches in Southern Mexico where she began her creative journey. She translated these offerings into this collection where each piece is made of solid sterling silver and can either bring friendship, love and safety if you believe that it will.

Another strong group is the Plage et Soleil Collection where Laura got her inspiration by traveling to various beaches all over the world. She uses an array of stones and beach treasures like turquoise, shells, pearls, horns and branches to make contemporary, and truly original pieces.

Don't forget to mark your calendars for this sale at www.thesavvy.com and we have Furla handbags at our loft space at 145 West 18th Street (between 6th and 7th) this Wednesday as well!

Spring 09 Trend Report: It’s all About Color

We’ve done a little digging and found that this Spring is all about color. There’s no better way to add a burst of freshness to your wardrobe repertoire than with a splash of vibrancy.

The folks at Pantone, also known as the color experts in the fashion community have given us their picks for Spring 09.

Remember, there are plenty of ways to use color in your wardrobe. For a small burst, try accessorizing with a scarf or a statement jewelry piece. For a bolder look, wear a colorful key piece as your focal point and the rest of your accessories can be clean and simple. Either way, we're certain that color will brighten your day and mood! We love this Ali Ro outfit, it's so on trend and a great use of color.

Part II: Get Your Spring Basics

It's a great time of year to make sure you stock up on some Spring basics. Hopefully, after you do a little Spring Cleaning, you can take a clear assessment of what you have and what's missing in your closet. Here are a couple essentials we recommended this season!

1.Tanks and Tees

You can never have enough tanks and tees. Whether you’re layering or wearing them solo, a new batch for Spring will make any outfit look crisp and fresh! We love James Perse Tees because his pieces are so soft and long lasting!

2.Spruce up your Undies

Well, this goes without saying, but a little attention in this department is a no brainer. You’ll want a few good styles to go with your summer dresses and pants. Plus, when you buy a few new ones, you can justify getting rid of those really old ones…because we all have em! Our pic is for Hanky Panky because they go with absolutely everything.

3.Freshen Up With A Lightweight Jacket

It’s time to ditch the winter jacket that you’ve been wearing for the past 5 months! Whether it’s to keep you warm or to make you look hot, a spring jacket is an essential. We think a jacket with any belt is a smart buy because when you have a cinched waist, it creates a feminine look and pulls together any outfit quite nicely!

4.Don’t forget to Accessorize

This can be a fun and affordable way to update your staple look. You focus on a dominant piece like a handbag or invest in a few pieces that will go a long way.
Accessories likes scarves, headbands, and fun jewelry (like Danielle Stevens starting today) can really make a basic outfit transform into a killer look.

Part I: Spring Cleaning Questions....

As we head into April, we couldn’t think of a better time to do a little spring cleaning. We know it’s a challenge to say goodbye to some of your closet staples, even though they're probably not your wardrobe staples! Whether it's that great dress you found for almost nothing or those "memory" pieces that may even date back to your undergrad days, it's time to let go!

To make it easier, we have a few Savvy questions that can help you sort, purge, clean and organize! We’re not going to tell you what to eliminate, but we’ll give you a few tips on how to make Spring Cleaning a whole lot easier.

1. How Long Has It Been Since You Wore That?

Chances are, if you haven’t put it on in a year or since the last season, you’ll never wear it. Put it into a "To Go" box and keep on sorting!

2. Does it Fit?

Maybe it once fit or you're hoping to squeeze into it. Regardless, if it's not a right fit NOW, then it’s time to say goodbye. Plus, when you finally get it on, you'll want a new one anyway.

3. Is it Wearable?

Are you holding on to that sweatshirt that started with a small hole and a frayed hem and now just looks like a disaster? Do you have a blouse that you were going to take to the cleaners because you thought the stain could be removed or the dress could be altered? If it's not a Grab and Go closet item, it's time to part with it!

4. Is it a Multiple?

Do you have six little black dresses but only wear just one? Can you open your own boutique that specializes in black pants? Pick your favorite two (in case one is at the cleaners) and leave the rest behind.

We'd like to think this is a good starting point for your Spring Cleaning Adventures!

Just remember, even if it's not staying in your closet, there are plenty of ways to recycle your clothes. Whether it's a hand-me-down to a family member, a donation to your favorite charity or even a clothing swap with your friends, you're old treasures can always be someone's new find!

We All Know What April Brings…

Before we see those May flowers, we're bound to have a few April showers. So, we wanted to show you our favorite rain boots to keep you in style and dry all day long....

We're in LOVE with Hunter Wellies. They’re functional, practical and can go with any outfit in the rain or as an everyday boot. Plus, in an array of colors, you can’t go wrong. A few of our Savvy in-house staffers have taken a liking to the Hunter Midnight Sparkle boots!

The reason why Hunters works so well is because these boots won't detract from your outfit, so pair it with solids, stripes and patterns and you won't have to sit in front of your mirror contemplating whether it works.

Savvy FYI: Did you know that the the original Hunter boot was the Green Wellington. Hunters were popular in WWI and WWII for army members and were even created as orthopedic shoes. Who knew that these boots would also be the perfect fashion statement!

Rumor has it that Jimmy Choo and Hunter have collaborated for a Limited Edition Wellie, that's set to launch on June 1st!
